3 Best Ways to Use Glitter Gel Pens for Beautiful Coloring Pages!

Glitter gel pens are soooooooo much fun to use with your adult coloring books.

Coloring changed for me when I bought my first set!

Color an entire page with them, or use alcohol markers for the background and add sparkly details with your glitter gel pens

There are endless ways you can have fun with your glitter gel pens

I even like to color them and name them after celebrities.

This is Dylan Mulvaney!

She’s cute, sparkly, cheery, and happy.

They are great pens for artists of all ages (or colorists). I just keep them in their original packaging.

They come in quite a few unique colors.

When I bought my first set of glitter pens, it took me a while to figure out how to use them properly.

You see…

Glitter gel ink pens aren’t like regular pens and markers.

They require a more delicate touch.

This post goes over the best way I’ve discovered to use glitter gel pens

I love to use glitter gel pens on my own intricate mandalas coloring book called “Many Mandalas”

Tip #1: Be gentle with your glitter gel pens

Glitter gel pens don’t require as much pressure as other markers, pencils, and coloring tools.

They produce better results if you simply glide softly over the surface for a smooth application.

Be very gentle and barely touch the paper to release the gel.

They usually come with a nice soft comfort grip that makes them easy to get a smooth experience.

Here is a video of what I mean.

Tip #2: Rotate your glitter gel pen every so often

Get in the habit of rotating the gel pen slightly every so often on your coloring pages.

This will prevent it from seeming like it’s drying up.

The little ball in the tip needs to stay loose, gently rotate your pen to keep it from getting stuck in one spot.

To get the best coverage of your vibrant colors, be gentle.

Tip #3: Look closely at your coloring page before you finish up

As I used my gel pen more and more, I realized the glitter sparkle made it hard to see when I missed a spot.

Especially on intricate designs.

The white from the page often looked like a piece of glitter under my lights, so I would miss many spots.

I found two ways to handle this.

  1. Look closely at your page before you’re completely finished
  2. OR… Use alcohol markers before or after to saturate the paper underneath. Before is best so you don’t dull the glitter.

Bonus Tip: Dealing with sputtering ink

Sometimes you’ll get sputtering ink, or a clog in your gel pen.

Different gel pen brands may have different levels of quality. Some may just be made poorly.

But for all others, this usually means the ink dried up in the tip. Simply color with it and move the finetip rollerball nip around to unclog it.

Here’s a quick video showing you how to unclog your gel pen:

Make sure you have fun!

There are no rules to coloring, whether with glitter gel pens or regular vibrant gel pens. So make sure you’re having fun.

If you miss a spot here and there or your glitter doesn’t turn out perfectly, it’s okay, it’s just one page, and you can always fix it.

Coloring is meant to be fun and relaxing. Try to keep from stressing about every detail.

Color outside the lines and be okay with it!

Happy coloring!
